From Dubai to Kerala: Building a Strong Malayalam Audience for Blue Lily
Our PR and marketing approach for Blue Lily was centred around one key objective: taking an independently produced Malayalam short film made in Dubai and creating a strong, organic connection with audiences across Kerala and the wider Malayalam-speaking community. Rather than positioning the film purely as a short-film release, we developed a communication strategy that highlighted the story, its emotional depth and the conversations it could create. The film’s exploration of toxic relationships, emotional manipulation, psychological trauma and domestic violence provided strong and meaningful communication hooks, while director Gautam Raveendran’s journey as a debut filmmaker added a compelling human-interest angle. We worked on identifying these different narratives and translating them into stories that would be relevant to Malayalam media and audiences. By focusing on the film’s themes, the filmmaker’s creative vision and the performances of its cast, we were able to create curiosity and awareness around Blue Lily while keeping the communication authentic to the film. The strategy was ultimately about bridging the geographical gap between Dubai, where the film was created, and Kerala, where we wanted the film to find a strong Malayalam audience.
Turning an Independent Short Film into a Meaningful Media Conversation
Our campaign went beyond traditional release announcements and promotional coverage by creating multiple editorial entry points for Blue Lily. We developed conversations around the filmmaker’s inspiration, the making of the film, its sensitive subject matter, the performances, the challenges of portraying domestic violence on screen and the film’s journey through the short-film festival circuit. This allowed different aspects of the project to reach audiences through credible and relevant Malayalam media platforms rather than communicating the film through a single promotional narrative. Director Gautam Raveendran’s interviews became an important part of this strategy, giving audiences a deeper understanding of the thought process and experiences behind the film. The feature in The New Indian Express, for example, provided a platform to explore the filmmaker’s perspective, the inspiration behind the story and the creative decisions involved in portraying violence and relationships. Alongside the film’s growing festival recognition, these conversations helped establish Blue Lily as more than an independent short film—they helped create a larger narrative around the project and gave Malayalam audiences multiple reasons to discover, engage with and talk about the film.
Our role was therefore not simply to generate publicity, but to build the right narrative around the film and take that narrative to the Malayalam audience in a way that felt relevant, credible and emotionally connected.
Result:
- Stronger Malayalam Media Visibility
- Stronger Audience Connection
- Built Credibility & Conversation
